Charley "Chuck" John Davis, Sr.

September 30, 1933 ~ November 26, 2017 (age 84) 84 Years Old

Charley John “Chuck” Davis, Sr. of Trenton, Kentucky died November 26, 2017.

Chuck was born September 30, 1933 in Boise, Idaho.  He was the youngest of five children.  His parents were George Franklin Davis and Covie Steadman Davis.  He is survived by his wife Margie Lucille Haley Davis, his children Denise Shivers (Dewayne), William Farwell (Ruth) of Clarksville, Tennessee; David (Susan), Greg (Jenni) of Louisville, Kentucky; daughter-in-law Janice of Knoxville, Tennessee; brothers George (Jackie) of Tehachapi, California; Robert (Katrinka) of Kamiah, Idaho; eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He was predeceased by his son Charley Davis, Jr., his parents, sisters Thelma and Velma, and brother Lester.

The son of a miner and logger, Chuck was in the woods at an early age.  Amid taking care of animals in the Great Northwest for the family, he found time to hunt.  And he was an avid hunter--he taught his children to hunt, fish, pack into primitive areas, and even how to catch rattlesnakes—when necessary.  He was an outdoorsman, one of the true cowboys that most will never meet.  He rode the range on a bull to tend the family’s cows when he was a child. He loved animals and was the best steward of his horses, cows, goats, dogs, and much later, cats.

As a young adult and when he met his wife, he served in the US Army as part of the 82nd and 101st Airborne as an airborne combat engineer.  He built bridges in the jungles of Panama with ropes and handsaws. In civilian life he was proud of being a part of helping to build out the infrastructure in California and the Los Angeles water supply and highway interstate systems.  He and Margie moved to Trenton, Kentucky in 1974 with their family. Chuck owned Chuck Davis Construction, operating heavy equipment on farmland in Christian, Todd, Logan and Montgomery counties. Most recently he worked in the family business of Hydro Solutions.

Chuck believed in family first.  He taught his children to respect everyone and could strike up a conversation with all he met. He taught his children the important lessons of life, respect, responsibility, to be a person of your word, can’t means you didn’t try hard enough, no excuses, and never, never quit.

Chuck was a man of many talents. He was always doing.  He taught himself how to play the concertina.  He took piano lessons, so he could play the pipe organ he rebuilt, that had belonged to his mother. He played the harmonica by ear. He taught his children and grandchildren historic Western folk songs to sing by the campfire. He loved to camp in the mountains of Idaho, which became a Davis family tradition. He could build and fix anything and taught his children to do the same. Anything from welding a swing for his grandchildren, to furniture, to a home addition; he was a Kentucky Colonel, heavy equipment operator, gardener, musician, carpenter, philosopher, but mostly a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

He will be remembered and missed by all who were fortunate to know him. He was a great example of integrity and perseverance, a friend who was a true friend through thick and thin.

Chuck’s family are honored to have had the help of Lynn Richardson, Marguerite Legros, Ann Day, Antigone Green, and Vicky Hooper, helping with patience and loving care in the last months of Chuck’s time with us.
